I thought it might be worth noting there are lots of solutions for this, each of course with their own advantages and disadvantages. I tried sshfs and then rsync and I think I'll try unison next. But coincidently there was just a pretty good discussion of the many options over at slashdot.

I'd just like to say thanks so much for writing this tutorial! I'm indirectly using rsync via duplicity. The duplicity tutorial on Ubuntu only states how to connect to NearlyFreeSpeech via FTP. Unfortunately there's something buggy with the FTP connection used. Been wracking my brain on how to use SSH while getting around the hostkey until I saw your post. :)

Thanks - this is a great method - and yes, this is a common problem. There is a minor glitch in the text 'The command code>sync "$HOME/rsync" tells ' (I think that a code tag needs to be completed). Interesting to hear about NearlyFreeSpeech.net too.
